Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah in 570 CE — the Year of the Elephant (see Surah Al-Fil). His father, Abdullah, passed away before his birth. His mother, Aminah, passed away when he was 6 years old. He was raised by his grandfather Abdul Muthalib, then his uncle Abu Thalib.
From youth, Muhammad was known as the most honest. The people of Makkah called him "Al-Amin" — the trustworthy. He worked as a shepherd, then a merchant. At age 25, he married Khadijah, a noble lady.
At age 40, while alone in Cave Hira, the angel Jibril came with the first revelation: "Read in the name of your Lord who created." (Al-'Alaq: 1)
He went home frightened. Khadijah comforted him: "Allah will not abandon you. You maintain kinship, you speak truthfully, you help the weak, you honor guests."
For 13 years in Makkah, the Prophet preached under severe pressure. Many early companions were tortured. Eventually he and the Muslims migrated to Madinah. There, Islam flourished. In 10 years, the Arabian peninsula united in Islam.
What's special about Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: despite leading the greatest change in human history, he still mended his own sandals, repaired his own clothes, and sat on the floor with companions. When Jews asked the signs of a prophet, one sign mentioned: he would sleep on a simple mat.
When he passed at age 63, the Prophet left no dinars or dirhams. He left only the Qur'an and his sunnah — guidance for all humanity until the end of time.
For children: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the best example in everything — as a child, husband, father, merchant, leader, and servant of Allah.
