الْفَاتِحَة
Meaning: The Opening
The opening chapter of the Qur'an. Recited in every unit of prayer — the verses we say most often in our lives.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismillaahir-rahmaanir-rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Alhamdu lillaahi rabbil-'aalamiin
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Ar-rahmaanir-rahiim
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
Maaliki yawmid-diin
Master of the Day of Judgement.
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
Iyyaaka na'budu wa iyyaaka nasta'iin
You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.
اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Ihdinas-siraatal-mustaqiim
Guide us to the straight path.
صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ
Siraatal-ladziina an'amta 'alayhim ghayril-maghdhuubi 'alayhim wa lad-dhaalliin
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor — not of those who have earned anger, nor of those who go astray.
Tafsir for Children
Al-Fatihah is the most beautiful du'a Allah taught us to say to Him. In it we praise Allah, declare that we worship only Him and ask only Him for help, then ask to be shown the straight path. Because it's so essential, this surah is recited at minimum 17 times each day (every rak'at of the five prayers). A child who memorizes Al-Fatihah correctly can already pray on their own.

In every rak'at of prayer. Also as the opening of most family supplications.
