When Your Child Is Sick
What to do when your child is sick — practical care and the du'as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
Signs
- Fever, unusual fussiness, or refusing food
- Quieter, tires more quickly
- Seeks hugs more often than usual
What to do
- 1
Calm yourself first. A sick child absorbs parental panic.
- 2
Maintain the basics: enough fluids, light food, more sleep.
- 3
Recite the du'a for the sick while stroking their head.
- 4
Don't keep asking 'where does it hurt?' — they need calm, not interrogation.
- 5
See a doctor if fever > 39°C, > 3 days, or worrying symptoms appear.
- 6
Once they recover, lead them in gratitude — 'alhamdulillah, Allah gave us health again.'
Islamic perspective
The Prophet ﷺ stroked the heads of the sick while reciting du'a, and taught that parents who patiently care for a sick child are rewarded. A parent's du'a for a sick child is among the most accepted — use that moment.
If just one line
When a child is sick, they don't need a panicked parent. They need a hand stroking their head while whispering a du'a.
