Baby Ais, the batter-stirrer

Umi needed the kitchen done fast. But letting Baby Ais 'help' turned out worth more.
Umi was rushing to make batter. Baby Ais tugged at my apron, wanting in. The fast way: "later, Umi's busy." But I paused and thought.
I gave her a little bowl and a wooden spoon. "This is Ais's job: stir this one." The batter was a mess, flour everywhere, and the kitchen took twice as long. But Baby Ais's face — feeling useful — was priceless.
A child allowed to help grows up feeling "I'm part of this family, I have a role." A child always waved aside because "it's faster alone" grows up feeling like a spectator. Today's mess is an investment in tomorrow's sense of worth.
The best of people are those most beneficial to others.
The cake came out a little dense. But Baby Ais ate it proudly because "Ais made it." And honestly, it was the best cake Umi ate all week.
