Mawlid: How to Introduce the Prophet ﷺ to Your Child

Written by Tim Baby Mo8 min read

Every month of Rabi' al-Awwal, Muslims remember the birth of the best human in history: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. On the ruling of specifically celebrating the Mawlid, scholars differ — some permit it as a means of remembering and loving the Prophet, others discourage it as not practiced by the early generations. This article doesn't enter that debate; it focuses on the one thing all agree upon: knowing and loving the Prophet ﷺ is an obligation upon every Muslim, including our children.

Why children need to know the Prophet ﷺ early

Children imitate the figures they admire. If we don't fill their hearts with admiration for the Prophet ﷺ, the world will fill it with other figures. Loving the Prophet isn't just emotion — it's the door to loving his character, then imitating it.

How to introduce him, by age

Ages 3–5: The loving Prophet

Tell of his gentleness: he loved children, kissed his grandchildren, shortened his prayer when he heard a baby cry, and smiled at everyone. Small children connect most easily with love.

Ages 6–8: The honest and just Prophet

Tell of the title "Al-Amin" (the trustworthy) given by the people of Makkah before he became a prophet. Tell how he was honest in trade and just to all. See The Story of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Ages 9+: The Prophet as a life model

Discuss how the Prophet ﷺ faced hardship, forgave enemies, and stayed humble despite leading. Have your child pick one sunnah to imitate this week — smiling, giving salam, or helping with chores (the Prophet helped his wife at home too).

Family activities in Rabi' al-Awwal

Closing

Whatever your family's view on celebrating the Mawlid, one thing is certain: a child who grows up with the Prophet's ﷺ stories and character planted in their heart has the best role model to accompany them for life. That is the most beautiful gift we can give.
