At-Takathur
Meaning: Rivalry in Worldly Increase
A warning against obsession with collecting wealth and status until we forget the afterlife.
Alhaakumut-takaatsur
Competition for more has distracted you,
Hattaa zurtumul-maqaabir
until you visit the graves.
Kallaa sawfa ta'lamuun
No! You will come to know.
Tsumma kallaa sawfa ta'lamuun
Then no! You will come to know.
Kallaa law ta'lamuuna 'ilmal-yaqiin
No! If only you knew with certainty,
Latarawunnal-jahiim
you would surely see the Hellfire.
Tsumma latarawunnahaa 'aynal-yaqiin
Then you would see it with the eye of certainty.
Tsumma latus-alunna yawma-idzin 'anin-na'iim
Then you will surely be asked that day about pleasure.
Tafsir for Children
This surah depicts people busy competing — wealth, status, the latest gadgets — until finally 'visiting the graves.' Allah reminds: every blessing we enjoy in this life will be asked about in the next — not to be punished, but to be seen: used for good or just for showing off. For children: new things we own aren't for boasting — they're for gratitude and sharing.
When to recite
When a child wants something just because a friend has it. When a family receives extra provision.
