Ash-Shams
Meaning: The Sun
This surah opens with Allah swearing by the sun, moon, day, night, sky, and earth — then invites us to keep our hearts pure.
Wasy-syamsi wa dhuhaahaa
By the sun and its morning brightness,
Wal-qamari idzaa talaahaa
and the moon when it follows it,
Wan-nahaari idzaa jallaahaa
and the day when it displays it,
Wal-laili idzaa yaghsyaahaa
and the night when it covers it,
Was-samaa-i wa maa banaahaa
and the sky and He who built it,
Wal-ardhi wa maa thahaahaa
and the earth and He who spread it,
Wa nafsiw wa maa sawwaahaa
and the soul and He who proportioned it,
Fa-alhamahaa fujuurahaa wa taqwaahaa
and inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness,
Qad aflaha man zakkaahaa
he has truly succeeded who purifies it,
Wa qad khaaba man dassaahaa
and he has truly failed who corrupts it.
Kadzdzabat tsamuudu bithaghwaahaa
Thamud denied the truth out of their transgression,
Idzim ba'atsa asyqaahaa
when the most wretched of them was sent forth,
Fa qaala lahum rasuulullaahi naaqatallaahi wa suqyaahaa
so the messenger of Allah said to them, "This is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink."
Fa kadzdzabuuhu fa 'aqaruuhaa fa damdama 'alaihim rabbuhum bidzambihim fa sawwaahaa
But they denied him and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled them,
Wa laa yakhaafu 'uqbaahaa
and He does not fear its outcome.
Tafsir for Children
Allah swears by His wondrous creations, then teaches one great lesson: He has inspired every soul to know right from wrong. The one who tends and purifies their heart succeeds; the one who lets it grow corrupt loses. The story of Thamud, who hamstrung Prophet Salih's camel, shows where following one's whims leads. For children: our heart is like a little garden — cared for with goodness, it grows beautiful.
When to recite
Often recited in prayer and when helping a child notice the signs of Allah in nature.
