An-Nas
النَّاس
Meaning: Mankind
The very last surah of the Qur'an. Together with Al-Falaq, recited before sleep to seek refuge in Allah.
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
Qul a'uudzu birabbin-naas
Say: "I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind,"
مَلِكِ النَّاسِ
Malikin-naas
The King of mankind,
إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ
Ilaahin-naas
The God of mankind,
مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ
Min syarril-waswaasil-khannaas
from the evil of the whisperer who hides,
الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
Alladzii yuwaswisu fii suduurin-naas
who whispers into the breasts of mankind,
مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ
Minal-jinnati wan-naas
from among the jinn and mankind.
Tafsir for Children
An-Nas teaches: when there's an evil whisper in our heart — whether from a devil or from people — we ask Allah directly: the One who created us, who owns us, who we worship. We call on Allah three times by three of His attributes. Then we name the problem. This surah together with Al-Falaq are called Al-Mu'awwidhatain — the two surahs of refuge.
When to recite
Before sleep (recite 3 times, blow on hands, wipe over the body). After obligatory prayers. When feeling anxious or troubled by intrusive thoughts.
