الْقَدْر
Meaning: The Power / Decree
About Lailatul Qadr — one night in Ramadan better than 1000 months. The night the Qur'an first descended.
إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ
Innaa anzalnaahu fii lailatil-qadr
Indeed, We sent it (the Qur'an) down during the Night of Decree.
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ
Wa maa adraaka maa lailatul-qadr
And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is?
لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
Lailatul-qadri khairum-min alfi syahr
The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.
تَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ مِنْ كُلِّ أَمْرٍ
Tanazzalul-malaa-ikatu war-ruuhu fiihaa bi-idzni rabbihim min kulli amr
The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.
سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ
Salaamun hiya hattaa mathla'il-fajr
Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.
Tafsir for Children
On one of the odd nights in the last 10 days of Ramadan is Lailatul Qadr — a night whose worship is better than 1000 months (over 83 years!). Angels descend with mercy until dawn. For children: on the last nights of Ramadan, invite them to pray briefly — it might coincide with this most special night.
