Al-Kautsar
الْكَوْثَر
Meaning: Abundance
The shortest surah in the Qur'an — only 3 verses. Contains the command to pray and sacrifice as proof of gratitude.
إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ
Innaa a'taynaakal-kautsar
Indeed, We have granted you (Muhammad) abundance.
فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ
Fasalli lirabbika wanhar
So pray to your Lord, and sacrifice.
إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ
Inna syaani-aka huwal-abtar
Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.
Tafsir for Children
Allah gave Prophet Muhammad ﷺ 'al-kautsar' — abundance, including a river in Paradise also called Kautsar. Then Allah reminds: the right response to a blessing is worship (prayer) and sharing (sacrifice). For children: for every blessing Allah gives us (health, family, food), our response is to pray and share.
When to recite
Part of the shortest in Juz 'Amma — often recited in voluntary prayers. When explaining Eid al-Adha etiquette to a child.
