Al-Falaq
Meaning: The Daybreak
Surah 113 — companion to An-Nas. Seeks refuge in Allah from the evil of anything He has created.
Qul a'uudzu birabbil-falaq
Say: "I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak,
Min syarri maa khalaq
from the evil of what He has created,
Wa min syarri ghaasiqin idzaa waqab
and from the evil of darkness when it spreads,
Wa min syarrin-naffaatsaati fil-'uqad
and from the evil of those who blow on knots (practicing witchcraft),
Wa min syarri haasidin idzaa hasad
and from the evil of the envier when he envies."
Tafsir for Children
Al-Falaq names four sources of harm: the evil of creation in general, the darkness of night, witchcraft, and envy. Allah who created the dawn that breaks the darkness — He is also the One who protects us from all of these. A child who memorizes this surah carries a 'shield' every night.
When to recite
Before sleep together with An-Nas and Al-Ikhlas. After obligatory prayers. When feeling watched or envied.
