Al-A'la
Meaning: The Most High
A surah that is easy to memorize and loved in prayer. It calls us to glorify the name of our Lord, the Most High.
Sabbihisma rabbikal-a'laa
Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,
Alladzii khalaqa fa sawwaa
who created and proportioned,
Walladzii qaddara fa hadaa
and who destined and then guided,
Walladzii akhrajal-mar'aa
and who brings out the pasture,
Fa ja'alahu ghutsaa-an ahwaa
then makes it dark stubble.
Sanuqri-uka fa laa tansaa
We will make you recite, [O Prophet], so you will not forget,
except what Allah wills. Indeed, He knows what is open and what is hidden.
Wa nuyassiruka lil-yusraa
And We will ease you toward ease,
Fa dzakkir in nafa'atidz-dzikraa
so remind, for the reminder benefits,
Sayadzdzakkaru may yakhsyaa
the one who fears [Allah] will be reminded,
Wa yatajannabuhal-asyqaa
but the most wretched will avoid it,
Alladzii yashlan-naaral-kubraa
he who will burn in the greatest Fire,
Tsumma laa yamuutu fiihaa wa laa yahyaa
then neither dying therein nor living.
Qad aflaha man tazakkaa
He has truly succeeded who purifies himself,
Wa dzakarasma rabbihi fa shallaa
and remembers the name of his Lord and prays.
Bal tu'tsiruunal-hayaatad-dunyaa
But you prefer the worldly life,
Wal-aakhiratu khairuw wa abqaa
while the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
Inna haadzaa lafish-shuhufil-uulaa
Indeed, this is in the former scriptures,
Shuhufi ibraahiima wa muusaa
the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
Tafsir for Children
Allah commands us to praise and exalt His name — the One who created everything in perfect measure and then guided it. Allah promises to preserve the Prophet's ﷺ memorization, and reminds that whoever fears Allah will heed the reminder. At the end Allah reminds us: the Hereafter is better and more lasting than this world — the same lesson found in the scriptures of Abraham and Moses. For children: choose what lasts over what is fleeting.
When to recite
Among the surahs the Prophet ﷺ often recited in Witr, the two Eids, and Friday prayer. Great for a child's next memorization step.
