Picky Eating
Calm strategies for a child who refuses food — without ending in a force-feeding battle.
Signs
- Refuses food even when hungry
- Only accepts specific foods for weeks at a time
- Spits out or spits up food
What to do
- 1
Schedule 4–5 meals at consistent times.
- 2
Serve small portions. Finishing a little beats wasting a lot.
- 3
Let the child help prepare — pick the plate or arrange fruit.
- 4
Avoid bargaining ('one more bite…') that turns eating into negotiation.
- 5
No screens at the table. Focus on taste and togetherness.
- 6
Teach the duas before and after eating — small rituals build gratitude.
Islamic perspective
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged eating together and never criticized food. He ate what was in front of him without demand. A parent's relaxed attitude about food rubs off on the child.
If just one line
A child forced to eat learns to refuse food. A child whose choices are respected learns hunger and fullness.
Recommended duas
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
Dua Before Eating
Read by the child before eating or drinking. If forgotten at the start, say 'Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu'.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ
Dua After Eating
Read by the child after finishing a meal, as gratitude.
