Sibling Rivalry
Managing sibling competition without making any child feel favored.
Signs
- Frequent fights over toys
- One child regresses — acts like a baby again
- Comments like 'mom loves my sibling more'
What to do
- 1
Give 1-on-1 time to each child — 15 minutes a day is enough.
- 2
Don't compare openly.
- 3
Acknowledge fairness isn't sameness: different ages, different rules.
- 4
During fights, don't immediately judge. Ask each in turn.
- 5
Teach emotion vocabulary early — 'I'm angry because…' beats a tantrum.
- 6
Make duas for both children by name — alternating — in front of them.
Islamic perspective
The Prophet ﷺ commanded justice between children — even in gift-giving. Injustice plants jealousy that ruins sibling bonds for life.
If just one line
Siblings who fight at home usually defend each other outside. Our job is to keep the home a safe place for both.
Supporting hadith
اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَاعْدِلُوا بَيْنَ أَوْلَادِكُمْ
Be just between your children
Fear Allah and treat your children with justice.
مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمْ لَا يُرْحَمْ
He who shows no mercy will receive none
Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.
