Bonding When You're Busy
Short on time? 15 attentive minutes beat an hour while scrolling.
Signs
- Child seeks attention through negative behavior
- Child quiet when asked about their day
- Parent feels they're 'with' the child but not 'present'
What to do
- 1
Pick one fixed slot — 15 minutes after dinner, for example.
- 2
Phone in another room. Airplane mode during bonding.
- 3
Follow what the child chooses — not what you want to teach.
- 4
Look in their eyes when they speak. Resist multitasking.
- 5
Close with a short shared dua — a hug and 'I love you'.
- 6
Each weekend, one special activity — cook together, walk together.
Islamic perspective
The Prophet ﷺ was a busy man — leading the ummah, judging cases, leading prayer. Yet he made time to play with Hasan and Husain. Presence is worship, not luxury.
If just one line
Children don't need 'quality time'. They need a lot of time, and they'll find the quality in it themselves.
