Why Do We Pray?

Baby Mo

Baby Mo watches Abi stop playing to pray. "Why do we pray, Abi?" Then Baby Mo finds the answer — with a little sujud of his own.

They were busy building blocks when the call to prayer drifted from the mosque. Abi stopped at once, smiled, and stood up. "One moment, champ. Abi's going to pray first."

Baby Mo pouted a little. "Why stop, Abi? Why do we even pray?"

Abi sat back down for a moment. "Let me ask you. If you love someone very much, would you want to see them every day?"

"Yes!" Baby Mo answered quickly.

"Well, prayer is like a happy appointment with Allah," said Abi. "Five times a day, we pause from playing, from being busy, and say: 'Thank you, Allah. I love You.' Like five hugs in a day."

Baby Mo tilted his head. "Five hugs for Allah?"

"Yes. Want to see how?"

Baby Mo nodded and followed Abi to the prayer mat. He watched closely. Abi raised both hands — "Allahu Akbar" — then bowed, then went down into sujud, his forehead resting calmly on the mat.

"In sujud," Abi whispered afterward, "we take our head — the highest part of us — and place it the lowest. That's how we tell Allah: You are the greatest, and I love You so much."

That afternoon they played all day — chasing, laughing, until they were tired and happy. As sunset neared, Baby Mo suddenly ran to his little prayer mat. Without being asked, he raised his tiny hands, then slowly went into sujud, copying Abi.

"Thank you, Allah," he said, his voice muffled by the mat, "today was so much fun."

Abi watched from the doorway, his eyes glistening. Baby Mo had understood: prayer isn't a burden that stops our play. Prayer is how we thank the One who gives us a beautiful day.

Establish prayer to remember Allah.

Now, invite your little one to make one "thank-you sujud" today — rest the forehead gently, then say, "Thank you, Allah." 🕌
