The Month of Safar: Not Unlucky — Teaching Children Tawakkul

Written by Tim Baby Mo4 min read

Safar is the second month of the Hijri calendar. Since ancient times, some have considered Safar an unlucky, calamity-filled month. Islam firmly rejects this belief.

No day or month brings bad luck

The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no contagion (by itself), no evil omen, no hamah, and no (bad luck in) Safar." (Bukhari & Muslim.)

This means no time by itself brings fortune or misfortune. All good and every decree comes from Allah.

Explaining it to children

  1. Allah governs everything. Say: "There is no unlucky day. The One who protects us is Allah, at any time."
  2. Replace fear with dua. When your child worries, read the morning & evening remembrance and the dua of protection.
  3. Plant tawakkul. Do your best, then entrust the outcome to Allah — that is the heart of reliance.

Still full of good

Safar is an ordinary month that can be filled with good deeds like any other: prayer, charity, kindness to family. In this very month we teach children that blessing comes from obedience, not from a date on the calendar.
