Al-Qari'ah
Meaning: The Striking Calamity
A depiction of the Day of Judgement — and the scales of deeds that determine everyone's fate.
Al-qaari'ah
The Striking Calamity!
Mal-qaari'ah
What is the Striking Calamity?
Wa maa adraaka mal-qaari'ah
And what will make you know what the Striking Calamity is?
Yawma yakuunun-naasu kal-faraasyil-mabtsuuts
The Day when people will be like scattered moths,
Wa takuunul-jibaalu kal-'ihnil-manfuusy
and the mountains will be like fluffed wool.
Fa-ammaa man tsaqulat mawaaziinuh
Then as for one whose scales are heavy (with good),
Fahuwa fii 'iisyatir-raadhiyah
he will be in a pleasing life.
Wa ammaa man khaffat mawaaziinuh
But as for one whose scales are light,
Fa-ummuhuu haawiyah
his refuge will be an abyss.
Wa maa adraaka maa hiyah
And what will make you know what it is?
Naarun haamiyah
A fire intensely hot.
Tafsir for Children
Al-Qari'ah depicts the Day of Judgement through two metaphors: people like scattered moths, mountains like fluffed wool. Then Allah explains: each person's deeds are weighed. Heavy good = a pleasing life in Paradise. Light good = the abyss. For children: every small kindness (helping a sibling, being polite to parents, praying on time) is weighed by Allah.
When to recite
When explaining the afterlife to a child without frightening them. When a child does small good — remind them it's being weighed.
