Al-'Adiyat
Meaning: The Racers
Allah swears by galloping war horses — then reminds people not to forget to thank their Lord.
Wal-'aadiyaati dhabhaa
By the racers, panting,
Fal-muuriyaati qadhaa
and the producers of sparks (when striking),
Fal-mughiiraati shubhaa
and the chargers at dawn,
Fa-atsarna bihii naq'aa
stirring up thereby clouds of dust,
Fawasathna bihii jam'aa
arriving thereby in the center collectively.
Innal-insaana lirabbihii lakanuud
Indeed, mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful.
Wa innahuu 'alaa dzaalika lasyahiid
And indeed, he is to that a witness.
Wa innahuu lihubbil-khairi lasyadiid
And indeed he is, in love of wealth, intense.
But does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered,
Wa hushshila maa fish-shuduur
and that within the breasts is obtained,
Inna rabbahum bihim yauma-idzil-lakhabiir
indeed, their Lord with them, that Day, is (fully) Aware.
Tafsir for Children
Allah swears by galloping war horses to stir people: you often forget to thank Allah, and love wealth too much. Yet all that's in the heart will be exposed. For children: don't be a child who only remembers toys and forgets to give thanks. Say 'alhamdulillah' for blessings, and remember Allah knows what's in our hearts.
When to recite
Teaching children gratitude and not over-loving possessions. Part of Juz 'Amma.
