Trouble Sleeping
A calming Islamic bedtime routine so your child sleeps faster and you can rest.
Signs
- Child takes a long time to fall asleep
- Wakes often in the night
- Wakes in the morning fussy or with puffy eyes
What to do
- 1
Start the same routine every night — a signal for the body to calm.
- 2
A warm bath 60 minutes before bed lowers body temperature.
- 3
Screens off at least 30 minutes before sleep.
- 4
Read one book slowly. A parent's voice is the best sedative.
- 5
Teach the bedtime dua — hold their hand as you recite together.
- 6
Close the room with dim or full dark. Avoid bright nightlights.
Islamic perspective
Sleep is the sibling of death — the Prophet ﷺ taught the bedtime dua as a reminder. Reciting it together with your child trains both worship habit and trust in Allah.
If just one line
The same routine, the same parent's voice, the same du'a — that's a child's anchor for sleep.
Recommended duas
بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Dua Before Sleeping
Read by the child before sleeping — a reminder that life and death are in Allah's hands.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Dua Upon Waking
Read by the child upon waking, starting the day in gratitude.
Dua of Protection for Children
Recited by parents over their children — often read before sleep or before the child leaves home. The Prophet ﷺ recited this for Hasan and Husain.
