Your Child's First Fast
How to invite a child to fast joyfully and gradually — not through hunger and tears.
Signs
- The child asks why parents aren't eating
- Starts asking about Ramadan
- Wants to try, even just half a day
What to do
- 1
Start with half-day fasting (suhoor to noon) at age 5–7.
- 2
Wake them for suhoor with foods they like, not with force.
- 3
Plan distractions — books, morning walks.
- 4
Skip the hardest hours with an afternoon nap.
- 5
Celebrate at iftar — the finish line should feel special.
- 6
Don't push full days before they're ready. Joyful half-days beat traumatic full ones.
Islamic perspective
The Companions in Madinah trained their children to fast by giving them woolen toys — when the child grew hungry, they played. This shows: training, not obligation, at a young age.
If just one line
A child's first fast doesn't need to be perfect. What matters is the feeling: 'I can do this, and Allah sees my effort.'
