Zakat al-fitr is an obligatory charity every Muslim gives at the end of Ramadan — including for children (paid by parents). It purifies the one who fasted and helps those in need share in the joy of Eid.
Key points
- For whom? Every Muslim soul — young or old, even an infant. Parents pay on behalf of their children.
- How much? One sha' of staple food (about 2.5–3 kg of rice), or its cash value per your local zakat authority. (Bukhari & Muslim, from Ibn Umar.)
- When? Best before the Eid prayer; may be given from the last days of Ramadan.
- To whom? The poor and those entitled.
Involving your child
- Measure & prepare together. Let your child help weigh the rice or fill the bag.
- Let them hand it over. Giving in person leaves a deeper mark than any explanation.
- Explain the purpose. “So friends who have less can also eat well and be happy on Eid.”
