Nuzulul Qur'an for Kids: When the Qur'an First Descended

Written by Tim Baby Mo8 min read

Nuzulul Qur'an commemorates the descent of the first revelation of the Qur'an to the Prophet ﷺ. In Indonesia, it's usually observed on 17 Ramadan. It's a fitting moment to introduce children to the story of how the Qur'an was born — the book that will accompany them for life.

The story of the first revelation

Before becoming a prophet, the Prophet ﷺ would often retreat alone to Cave Hira atop Jabal Nur (the Mountain of Light) near Makkah, to reflect. On a night in Ramadan, the Angel Jibril came and embraced him firmly, saying: "Iqra!" (Read!).

The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I cannot read." Jibril repeated three times, then conveyed the first verse of the Qur'an:

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

"Read in the name of your Lord who created." (Al-'Alaq: 1)

He returned home trembling and afraid. His wife, Khadijah, wrapped him in a cloak and comforted him: "Allah will never forsake you, for you maintain kinship, you are honest, and you help the weak."

The great lesson of the first verse

It's deeply significant that the first word Allah revealed was "Read" — not "pray" or "fast." This shows how Islam honors knowledge and reading. For children: learning to read, reading the Qur'an, seeking knowledge — all are Allah's first command.

Closing

Nuzulul Qur'an isn't just a date on the calendar — it's a celebration of the greatest gift Allah gave humanity: guidance for life. A child who understands the Qur'an as "a love letter from Allah" will hold it with a different heart — not as an obligation, but as a treasure.
